From time to time the joy of keeping a dog is clouded by the unpleasant dog smell that the dog emits and which can be found all over the apartment. This becomes a problem especially when visitors are coming. But of course, the dog can't help his own smell! What can you do about dog smell?

First and foremost it is up to the dog owner to make sure that either no dog smell develops in the first place or that it is at least neutralized in such a way that it does not attract attention unpleasantly. This can be achieved by regular care and the use of natural fragrances.

How does the dog's smell develop?

The smell emitted by dogs can have a variety of causes. In summer, for example, the animals often bathe in water, which can cause the coat to develop an unpleasant odor over time. But also in winter, the animals like to wallow on the ground and in the muddy dirt. Gradually, therefore, certain particles settle in the animals' fur, which in the long term lead to a certain smell. The dog itself can also emit unpleasant odors. On the one hand by bad breath, on the other hand also if it has flatulence. Both are usually related to the intake of food.

Dog care as a remedy against bad smells

A smell particularly easily settles in a matted and dead hair of the dog. Proper coat care is therefore of crucial importance to prevent odors from settling permanently. In addition, the dog should be bathed regularly - whereby special dog shampoos can be used. However, such a bath attacks the natural protective film of the dog's skin and should therefore only be carried out every few months. Textiles that come into regular contact with the animal, on the other hand, must be washed much more often because otherwise they also assume the smell of the dog.

What else helps against dog smell?

Flatulence and bad breath can often be avoided by changing the food. A little experimentation is needed to find the food that is best tolerated. It can also help to mix finely chopped parsley or chlorophyll tablets with the dog food. Both largely neutralize odors. Care should be taken with fragrance sprays. These are often based on a chemical cocktail and are therefore unhealthy for humans and animals. It is, therefore, better to use dried lavender or natural scented oils to create a pleasant smell within your own four walls.

Finally, wet dog smells like dog. We ourselves will only smell the deviations, otherwise, the dog owner becomes smell-blind. On sultry days, the smell can also increase. Often, however, textiles are the source like carpets, dog cushions or the dog blanket loved by the four-legged friend.
